In a sign that Chavez candidates are learning from their leader, PSUV candidate Iris Varela has called for the disqualification of her Unity Table opponent Maria Corina Machado in upcoming legislative elections.

While under the direction of Machado, domestic electoral monitoring organization Sumate ("Join Up!") received funding in the past from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in the United States. Varela cites this financing as grounds for Machado´s disqualification, despite the fact that receipt of international funding by Venezuelan NGOs is not--nor has been in the past--against the law.
