Another Chavez Lie: "Colombia is more dangerous now than eight years ago"

President Hugo Chavez is quoted in a Foreign Ministry press release today as follows:
President Chávez noted that the Uribe government leave office defeated, because the Colombian president did everything to develop an aggressive and militaristic policy, but failed to bring peace to the country. “Today Colombia is more violent and [there is] more drug-trafficking than eight years ago, so he tries to shoot into us (…) and say that he couldn’t defeat it because Chávez protects them.”

I'm sorry, Mr. President, this is simply not true. You are incorrect. Anyone who has been to Colombia more than once in the last eight years knows that Colombian cities are much safer than those in Venezuela. Why do you think Colombians overwhelmingly supported outgoing President Uribe's candidate in the June presidential election?

Colombia certainly continues to have human rights problems of its own. However, the personal security situation in Venezuela is now far worse than that of Colombia. If you wish to make a claim to the contrary, Mr. Chavez, please present the facts to back it up.

Better yet, why not begin the hard work of improving personal security in Venezuela rather than flooding media with fabricated news that "there is nothing to worry about?" Your supporters and all Venezuelans would appreciate it.
